BMac Events

BMac is a really strong community here at Whitworth. Obviously, some people living in Ballard ro Mac don’t want to be part of it and just stay in their room while we enjoy our time together but at least in BMac you have the choice to either be alone or to be part of a family.

The first main “event” in the community is the “BMac dinner”. We basically want to have dinner together every day to make and maintain great friendships and also to get to know everyone living in our dorms.  The only problem is that the HUB is not that big and there’s a lot of people on campus so at dinner time it’s quite complicated to find 2 or 3 tables for 50-60 people all together. So, a long time ago BMac leaders decided to have dinner at 5 o’clock exactly while the cafeteria is still free.

Hence, every day, at 5 we meet on the smiley in front of Mac and go to dinner together. Another particularity of this dinner, is the “cup-thing”. After 5.15, the first two empty cups are stacked together. The one stacking the cups, puts its finger on his nose and everyone follows. The last one to do it kind of lose the game and for this will carry the stack of all the cups of the tables at the end of the meal. This game is good for two reasons, first, it’ a special thing we have together, and it makes you feel involved in the community but most importantly, the second good point is that it prevents you from looking at your phone. This game was created to prevent people to being stuck on their phone all dinner, the only way you see people putting their finger on their nose is if you talk with them all dinner long.

The most famous BMac tradition that everyone on campus told me about before moving in, was “Milk and Cookies”. Every Wednesday night, traditionally, the Ballard lady’s bake cookies for the Mac men, then, at 11 precisely, they run up the stairs in Mac, to the second-floor lounge and give those cookies to the shirtless men. Then we all sing a Mac-written song to celebrate this tradition. Pay attention, there’s a trick, every week, there’s a special ingredient in the cookies, this can range from soy sauce to trunk (tree skin). The ones getting those poisoned cookies are the one selected to do the dishes. The last good thing about milk and cookies is that it brings together a lot of residents, so the senator does a little speech every week of all the events and thing to pay attention the next week.

Those were the basic every day/week events, you can read more about other special events, here…
